EAST ASIAN PAPER: ART, TECHNOLOGY, AND CONSERVATION

3PM – 4PM

Explore the history of traditional East Asian papers, the situation of contemporary manufactures, and the practical applications in art and conservation with Minah Song, conservator-in-residence for the Andrew W. Mellon Conservation Initiative at KU. Since the first millennium CE, China, Korea and Japan arduously developed papermaking techniques responding to local demands and mastering the use of locally available raw materials. Over the last two centuries, the versatility of East Asian paper has been gradually recognized in the West, and its presence in art and conservation worldwide expanded significantly. The talk will also explore the importance of materials used in the papermaking process as well as the process itself and how it can affect the final product and its possible applications.
