The Gilded Age in American Art

Evaluation | Curriculum Connections | Resources | Tours 1876 - 1917

This resource begins with a brief overview of the Gilded Age and several key points of Gilded Age art. Then for each of six works of art from the Spencer's permanent collection there is a brief description of the artist and work as well as visual and cultural/historical discussion starters.

This interdisciplinary resource is designed as an online pre-visit orientation for junior high and high school teachers. It focuses on works from the Gilded Age in the Spencer Museum of Art's permanent collection and is designed to tie-in with a visit to the museum. If a visit to the Spencer is not possible, the resource can be used in the classroom to teach a unit on the Gilded Age.
