Wayne Thiebaud
United States, born 1920
Around the Cake, 1962
Oil on canvas
Gift of Ralph T. Coe in memory of Helen F. Spencer, 82.144
In Around the Cake, Wayne Thiebaud [TEE bo], elevates an unimportant object from daily life – a cake- into a subject worthy of our attention, emphasizing the richness of ordinary objects and experience. Unlike Rosenquist, who uses the slick style of advertising art, Theibaud uses thick paint whose texture is very evident. He playfully challenges the viewer to compare the textures of his paint and the cake frosting.
