paint on canvas View full record

This work is from a series of twenty-nine paintings, seven of which are in the Spencer Museum of Art collection. Senegalese artist Yelimane Fall takes inspiration from each line of the lyrical poem "Jaawartou" written by Sheikh Amadu Bamba. A Senegalese saint who lived from 1853 to 1927, Sheikh Bamba is central to the Mourides movement, a large Sufi order that places emphasis on work. The poem, sung for hours at a time while working and praying, is sometimes referred to as a “Passport to Paradise” due to its highly praised ability to confer blessings on its readers.
