Ensconsed in the vibrant pottery community in central North Carolina, and a descendant of English ceramic traditions, Mark Hewitt blends local ideas with influences from Africa and Asia. Tatiko is named for a village in central Nigeria known for making pottery that the artist visited in 1978. The belly of this large pot has blue glass pieces that were pressed into the clay and melted when the pot was fired. This work was given in memory of Rodger A. Wilkin by friends and family including his wife of fifty years, Betty Wilkin, and son Peter Wilkin, a noted ceramics artist. The late Rodger Wilkin was a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and a renowned architect in Kansas City.
