Steven Lyons, No Blood for Oil, USA,This brand new art-into-theater workshop, devised by the Lawrence Youth Ensemble and the Spencer Museum of art, happens on Friday, October 16, 2009 from 10 AM to 4 PM, in the Spencer’s central court. The workshop caters specifically to USD497 students in grades 7 through 12 who have no classes on this date. ACT OUT: ART IN! will focus on an exhibition of 111 protest posters from around the world, titled: The Graphic Imperative: International Posters for Peace, Social Justice and the Environment, 1965-2005.
Workshop participants will investigate the exhibition and then work with professional theatre producers to create sets, scenarios and characters based on the posters and the messages that inspire them. By the end of the workshop, students will devise their own 15-minute “protest” play and produce a free public performance at 4:30 PM, within the exhibition space. Set-design, art direction, choreography and music will feature strongly so back-stage talent, not just on-stage talent is needed!
The workshop costs $25 with a discounted fee of $20 for Friends of the Museum members. Lunch is included in this fee. Scholarships are available upon request and with a written statement of interest. To register please email smakids@ku.edu or call the Spencer’s education office on 785.864.0137.Walk-in registrations are welcome on the day. Class size is limited so advance registration is recommended. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further details.
