Below, you can download or flip through the online companion catalogue to the Spencer exhibition Extra/Ordinary: Video Art from Asia (October 24, 2009 – February 14, 2010). Written by the exhibition curator, Kris Imants Ercums, this catalogue includes an introductory essay to the exhibition, individual thematic entries on the art work, and artist biographies. The catalogue design juxtaposes the “objecthood” of video—VHS tapes, film, and discs—with ordinary construction materials used in the gallery installation. Mundane materials such as particle board and two-by-fours, while exposed for what they are, flirt with elegance in a film of pearlescent glaze, offering viewers a “black box” experience with hope for something extra. By repositioning our constructed notions of the “everyday” as absurd encounters, unexpected discoveries, or comical interventions the artists in Extra/Ordinary explore the imaginative potential embedded in the everyday.
