Celebrating final week of Dan Perjovschi installation, SMA Student Advisory Board to host “Dunk & Draw”

Lawrence, KS, January 27, 2011 – As part of a week-long “Drawathon” celebrating the final days of the the Dan Perjovschi Central Court drawing exhibition, the Spencer Museum of Art and its Student Advisory Board (SAB) will host a “Dunk & Draw” event Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at 5:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public, and includes Roasterie coffee from the Kansas Union, complimentary donuts from Muncher’s Bakery, and music provided by DJ Genki.

Guests are encouraged to make their own drawings and interact with members of the Student Advisory Board, who will be available to answer questions and discuss Perjovschi’s drawings.

Romania-born international artist Dan Perjovschi served as the Spencer’s fall 2010 International Artist-in-Residence, visiting campus from Sept. 2-16, 2010, and creating a unique installation in the Museum’s Central Court. For this site-specific project, Perjovschi drew directly onto the walls of the Central Court with permanent black markers. His cartoon-like drawings are related to student life, current events, and global politics.

Since Perjovschi’s drawings are on the walls of the Central Court, they will inevitably be painted over once the exhibition concludes on Feb. 6. “Perjovschi begins his projects knowing that sometimes they won’t be around that long,” says SAB President Annette Becker. “We wanted to acknowledge the work, which has been so popular with students and, really, all of our guests. And even if people can’t make it to our event on Thursday, throughout the final week of the exhibition, the Museum will have drawing materials available for guests to create their own Perjovschi-inspired works.”

Perjovschi has worked on projects all over the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Venice Biennale, and The Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) Toronto.
