Visual Voices: Community Youth Project, Quilt Exhibition

July 11 – September 13, 2009
Lobby Gallery

Artist Marla Jackson has worked with a group of local students in Lawrence to teach them sewing skills and inspire them to create narrative quilts. The quilts on display here are the results of these workshops. The artists/students visited the Spencer Museum in the summer and fall of 2008 as one element of this activity. Marla’s own story-quilts have been exhibited nationally, and several are currently on tour across the country. She is an active participant in the Women of Color Quilters Network, the umbrella non-profit organization under which she has conducted these workshops with local students. Marla has earned grant funding from several sources to help support this work.
