Steinlen, who was outspoken in his socialist and anarchist views, produced thousands of illustrations and lithographs, and was probably better known than Toulouse-Lautrec in his day. His works were frequently printed in radical journals, including Gil Blas illustre, Chambard Socialiste, Feuille, Les Temps nouveaux, Assiette au beurre, and Canard sauvage [Gil Blas Illustrated, The Socialist Upheaval, Newsprint, New Times, Plate of Butter, and Wild Duck - also meaning Wild Hoax]. Studies for two images for journals can be seen in the portrait of Steinlen done by Pieter Dupont in this exhibition.
