Wood was born near Anamosa, Iowa. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Design, Iowa State University, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Académie Julian in Paris. Posthole digging is exhausting work. All the dirt that comes out of the hole must be tamped back into the hole even though much of the soil has been displaced by the post.
