Hay Rack
Woodcut

Loan: Collection of Steven Schmidt Shokler was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and he studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Chester Springs Academy, and the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. He is strongly identified with the history of screenprinting in the U.S. (North, 88) In this woodcut, Shokler shows us an ingenious cover for the hay: a wooden roof that can be elevated and lowered to conform to the height of the stack (note the peg holes in the vertical staves) (Flory & Fishburn).
