Martin Lewis was born in Castlemaine, Australia. He studied at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. In 1900 he set sail for San Francisco, ultimately settling in New York after travelling across the country. Together with Armin Landeck and George Miller he founded the School for Printmakers in New York. He is best known for his city scenes (many of them at night) incorporating the effects of wind and rain. (Johnson, 120). The site of this wooden stave silo is “Sandy Hook, Connecticut. The mailbox bears the name ‘Landeck,’ referring to Lewis's friend Armin Landeck" (McCarron, 190).
