Loan: Collection of Steven Schmidt Lauber was born in Meschede, Germany, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1864. In this work, a farmer with only his scythe and a jug of water sets out for a day of hard labor. When retired Kansas farmer Wayne Flory considered this print he remarked only, “I have sympathy for that man. My grandfather on my mother’s side could do it.” (Flory & Fishburn) Sources
