Loan: Collection of Steven Schmidt Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He studied at the Boston Art Club and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Hassam, who traveled extensively in Europe, became a central figure in American impressionism. His significant body of work as a printmaker was begun late in life. This print, that shows a farmer unloading a hay wagon in a timber frame barn, was done shortly after Hassam moved into an early 18th-century cottage in East Hampton on Long Island (Burnside). Sources
