Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He studied at the Boston Art Club and at the Académie Julian in Paris. Hassam, who traveled extensively in Europe, became a central figure in American impressionism. His significant body of work as a printmaker was begun late in life. This print, that shows a farmer unloading a hay wagon in a timber frame barn, was done shortly after Hassam moved into an early 18th-century cottage in East Hampton on Long Island (Burnside).
