Loan: Collection of Steven Schmidt John Steuart Curry was born near Dunavant, Kansas. He studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, and taught at the Art Students League in New York and the University of Wisconsin. As a muralist one of his major commissions was for the Kansas State Capitol rotunda. Curry used another version of this print as a Christmas card. The implement at the left in this composition is a manure spreader. The small front wheels facilitated turning. Behind this may be a combine (the box-like structure is seems to be a combine hopper), which would make sense in wheat country. (Flory & Fishburn) Sources
