Spencer Museum of Art: Letha Churchill Walker Memorial Art Fund, 1995.0058 Avis Chitwood was born in the Kansas City area and resided in Topeka, Kansas, where she was involved with the Topeka Art Guild. Chitwood, who held a degree in engineering drafting, was active in a variety of arts and crafts, including etching, which she taught at Washburn University in Topeka. Old Halliburton Mill was near Boiling Springs, Tennessee, where Chitwood had family. If a farm had a small mill like this it was generally used for custom grinding and milling as well as for the needs of the owners (Flory & Fishburn). The fence in the background is of the unusual double post variety. Sources
