Avis Chitwood was born in the Kansas City area and resided in Topeka, Kansas, where she was involved with the Topeka Art Guild. Chitwood, who held a degree in engineering drafting, was active in a variety of arts and crafts, including etching, which she taught at Washburn University in Topeka. Old Halliburton Mill was near Boiling Springs, Tennessee, where Chitwood had family. If a farm had a small mill like this it was generally used for custom grinding and milling as well as for the needs of the owners (Flory & Fishburn). The fence in the background is of the unusual double post variety.
