Butler, who was active as a painter and etcher, was born in Yonkers, New York, in 1896, and studied in New York at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. (Kraeft, 140) The windmill and water tank are the center of existence in this desolate scene, which is presumably in the Southwest. The donkeys or mules in the foreground were better able to withstand the uncompromising climate than horses.
