Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris. In addition to his work as a muralist and painter, Benton held various teaching positions, including at the Art Students League in New York and the Kansas City Art Institute. Many of his lithographs are taken from his paintings, as in this example. Benton wrote of this piece "Scene in the hill country of East Tennessee in 1928. A painting of this 30" x 40" is owned by the St. Louis Museum. I doubt whether this kind of harvesting can be found anymore - anywheres." (Fath, p.74)
