Second Life’s slogan is “Your World. Your Imagination.” The virtual world itself is constructed entirely by humans digitally manipulating pieces of information.
How much of our own “real-life” worlds do we construct? We might remodel our house or office to create a different space. Or we might unconsciously construct a story to fit our memory of a certain event.
For her series Accidentally Kansas, artist Lori Nix explored her memories of disasters which defined her childhood growing up in Kansas. Her technique of photographing miniatures and models gives the viewer an opportunity to consider the accuracy, or reality, of her memory.
Albert Y. Wong also challenges us to think about what is real and what is not. While his image may look like an actual piece of paper taped to a wall, it is, of course, only skillfully-manipulated marks on a canvas.
