Conversation V: Alternate Realities

Social Networking

Throughout time, human relationships have been at the heart of nearly every aspect of life. The same is true for the virtual world of Second Life. Users may meet people from across the world, forming friendships, business partnerships or even romantic relationships. How do online relationships differ intrinsically from those formed in a physical space? What about the knowledge or emotions associated with them?

The works in this section explore ways in which people interact in the physical environment. How do their exchanges vary with the circumstances? Do they already know each other, as in Joseph Judd Pennell’s Nellie Martin and Friend? Or are they in a situation which may include strangers, as in Elliott Erwitt’s Beach Group, Sylt, West Germany?
