Scanning Questions:
Describe the colors you see. Are they mostly bright or mostly dull?
Do you see any horizontal or vertical lines, or are they more diagonal?
Is there subtle modeling with gradations in tone, or are there flat areas of solid color?
How has the artist shown highlights in the man’s hair and shadows in his face?
What patterns has the artist repeated?
Are there lines in his face all the same width or are they thin in places and thick in other places?
How does the foreground contrast with the background?
Describe his facial expression. Does he look calm or agitated? How?
Does he look more line a cartoon or a real person? Why?
Compare and contrast Shimomura’s portrait to Layton’s self portrait noting who the subject is and the differences in line quality and expression.
