Scanning Questions:

  1. Describe the shapes you see. Are they organic or geometric?
  2. Look at the sculpture from different angles. Which do you think is the front side? Why?
  3. How does the artist draw your attention to that side?
  4. Look closely at the design, and describe the lines and shapes. What does the pattern remind you of?
  5. Is the form open or closed? Why do you say that?
  6. How do you think the artist made this sculpture? Was it from one big flat piece, or many pieces put together? Look at the edges.
  7. Do you think this is a functional piece, or is it for decoration?
  8. How does the artist combine abstract form and imagery from real life? What might he be saying about people’s relationship with nature?
  9. Compare and contrast these abstract landscape sculptures considering differences in line, material and color.
