Scanning Questions:

  1. Describe the value scale in this artwork. Where is the darkest area?
  2. What is in the foreground, middle ground, and background?
  3. How does the artist show different textures in the foreground?
  4. What kinds of lines do you see in the foreground?
  5. How did the artist use lines to move your eye back into the picture?
  6. What elements has the artist repeated?
  7. Look at how much of the picture is ground compared to sky. Which is the artist trying to emphasize?
  8. Think about the setting and the people’s clothing. Who do you think they are? What are they doing?
  9. Do you think they are struggling in their situation, or are they optimistic and positive about the future? How can you tell?
  10. Compare and contrast this landscape drawing with landscapes depicted in other media.
