Kris Ercums, Curator of Asian Art
January | February 2008
From Beijing to Lawrence. Kris Ercums, the museum's Asian Art Curator since October, moved here from China's bustling capitol, where he was researching his doctoral dissertation. His trans-Pacific leap in many ways aptly mirrors the Spencer's own path toward deeper global engagement. Ercums, whose training at the University of Chicago offered him opportunities to organize exhibitions for both the Smart Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago, retains rich and abundant connections with the artistic and intellectual communities in Beijing—ties he already is using in his work on the Hill. Recently, director Saralyn Reece Hardy sat down for a discussion with the Spencer's newest curator. Excerpts from their conversation follow.
