Please note that while the Spencer Museum of Art owns the works in its collection, it does not own the copyrights for the works. Copyrights may be held by the artist, estate, gallery, or agency. Permission to reproduce a work in the museum’s collection must be secured from the third party copyright holder unless the work is in the public domain. Photographs created by the Spencer Museum of Art, including works in the public domain, are protected by United States copyright laws.
Works in the public domain are available for use by anyone for any purpose. Images of these works are available by submitting a rights and reproductions request. Works created before 1923 are in the public domain. More information about public domain.
The Spencer Museum of Art is working to identify the copyright holders for all the works in its collection. If you are interested in reproducing a work in the collection, but are unsure of its copyright status, please contact us via e-mail photorr@ku.edu or phone (785) 864-6368.
The Spencer Museum of Art must have proof of permission from third party copyright holders to complete reproduction requests.
Submit Rights & Reproduction Request
In most cases there will be a digital file preparation fee and a reproduction fee. The reproduction fee is calculated based on print run, language editions, size of reproduction, etc. Details about these fees are explained below.

Scholarly research or personal use:
We do not charge Reproduction Fees for images for scholarly research or personal use, only the $35 Digital File Preparation fee applies. Scholarly research or personal use is limited to: dissertations, images strictly for scholarly research, or personal use (not for publication).
Examples of commercial use include textbooks, children’s books, magazines, newspapers, CD covers.

Payment must be received in advance of shipment on all international orders. At this time we are unable to accept payment in foreign currency. We accept payment in the form of checks drawn from a U.S. bank, paid in U.S. dollars and by credit card (VISA or Mastercard).
