I find serenity in tree covered areas, it's a peacefulness that washes the worry away.L Marie Liewer

Just over a year ago, I shot a series of videos on the rebirth of Greensburg, KS one year after an F5 tornado had leveled the town. What struck me most were the trees. The spindly regrowth was haunting. The trees were reflective of the fragility of new ideas and the courage it took for that community to rebuild green.

Throughout the years I've given this tree it's space. It has paid me back with a graceful and inspiring structure with which I gently play.Kathy Hall

One day when I was 12, I came home from Campfire Girls with a redbud seedling to plant in the yard. It was no more than a stick with a few roots attached. I asked my dad where I should plant it, and he looked at it and chuckled and said, 'Anywhere you want'. So I planted it about three feet from our back fence. The stick grew into a big tree with long branches that got entangled with other trees and hung over the fence. That tree outlasted my father and lived 30 years until the city of Wichita took it out along with our house to widen a highway. Here I have an old redbud in the front yard with one arm that hangs over the driveway. Its elbow threatens the roof my car every time I back out. Redbuds seem determined to grow wherever they are. Trees. In my lifetime I have taken more photographs of trees than of people. I'm not certain what this says about me or my psyche. Some might say one as attached to trees needs to do some serious introspection - to find herself and connect more to other humans. My response would be that I find my connection to everything in the world - human and non-human - through my relationship with trees. No being is more grounded or grounding. Lawrence has incredible trees and the seasons treat them well. Noelle Kurth

This is what happens when the spring appears to have sprung, and then it snows the next day.
This is at dusk after an early April snow. This tree had already grown bright green spring leaves
and it goes well with the pure white snow.

During the winter months I would find myself driving past my favorite tree late at night. Even in the darkness its overwhelming presence stood frozen against the night sky. It was the tree I would spend summer afternoons under reading and daydreaming. Five years after moving away from my hometown I still look at trees in the student ghetto hoping I'll find another tree to call my favorite. Sierra Falter

A quince tree in the herb garden of the cloister museum in the Bronx. One of my first photos; and also, I think, one of my best. It expresses my favorite beauty as I see it in the world: process of creation, softness, roundness dripping from hardened, yet elegant limbs...Jennifer Wilson

Ponce de Leon saw this tree. Whitney saw this tree. It’s her favorite. Trees have the fortune of touching many lives.Kent VanHoesen

A couple years ago in April, a surprise snow covered all the newly blossomed trees in Sterling, Kansas. I just love how there are two seasons in this one photo. It's beautifulRachel Harris

Although, at first, it might appear that we are grounded in our singular trunks, a life on this planet is a life of connectivity and supportive networks--culturally, biologically, and emotionally.Bertram Lyons, Director's Intern

This tree reminded me of the trees in the Wizard of Oz. Moaning in silence, unable to break the spell cast upon it by a wicked witch.Sherry L Kopf

Friendships are like trees. They support you, shelter you, and they grow over time. Just like the branches of a tree, networks of friends expand and change. In different seasons the tree blossoms, or gets covered with ice and snow, just like friendships can be beautiful, or at times burdened by disagreements and stress. But no matter what, the branches-relationships always stay connected to the trunk- the foundation and strength of the relationship.Elizabeth Cattell, Communications Intern

I was mesmerized by the white flowers all over the places ever since my first Spring in Lawrence. I have only learned that they are Bradford Pears recently. The pear flowers are among the things of Spring I look most forward to every year. Ai-lian Liu

Here is my favorite recent tree photo - This is a white oak at our home in Douglas County. I built a treehouse around the oak for our daughters. The treehouse is freestanding and is not directly attached to the tree. Stephen Goddard

I often walk past this tree on my way home from work. It’s near the football stadium, and I was so relieved to see it still standing after the practice field was built. I love how the branches remain stark white year round, no matter what the season. This was a particularly beautiful day. I thought the bright blue sky against the white branches made a nice contrast.
